Got a few more questions here from the new kid on the block (An almost 50 year old one at that). I have the popping noise at slow speeds from both the front and rear (During bumps and turns) that a lot of folks have had. I had my mechanic look at it while I had him changing the trans filter. He said that the rear of the front leaf springs were slightly twisted and were wearing at the bushing/mount. How feasable does this sound?
Also said the splines on the rear driveshaft were pretty worn (Saw this myself). What the heck is causing this?
I will put anti-seize on the front body mounts and see if that helps.
A new driveshaft is $565 from Ford (2000 Limited 4WD V-10). Sounds way too salty for me. Does any of the F-250/F-350 driveshafts fit the X? I'll look in a junkyard for a good one if so...
Not sure what to tell you about the springs but as to the driveshaft, what is worn? The splines in the yoke that goes into the trans? If so there are driveline shops that can fix that cheap
not being funny , but if your driveshaft goes , then theres nothing left, it wont move at all !! all you will do is rev the engine, are they sure that the 'splines on the rear driveshaft are pretty worn'
i.e. if you have worn splines on the drive shaft then you should get no movement , they will be like. . .. . . a pole spinning in a hole.
Yeah, but maybe they mean the sides of the splines (not the top). What if you had a little backlash within the splines. That back and forth movement could get worse...right? I'm speculating here.
It seems that the slop is what was there from the factory. It is quite a bit, but should be ok. I am going to lube the body mounts tomorrow and see what happens.
I'll look under there tomorrow and see if any of those virgins are still hangin' around
