I have an 86 F150 that I just recently installed a Kenwood am fm cassette radio in. I was wondering if I could install a cd changer too. I have read that instaling these things is really hard and that it should be done professionally. I was just wondering first if it couls be done, and second if I could do it myself. Any help would be appricieated.

To answer you question, you must first decide if your deck is capable of running a CD Changer, or if you will have to get an FM Modulated changer with external controls. Neither are hard to install. Basically you will have a power, a ground, and a turn on, then you will have to run the control cable to either the deck, or your externaly mounted control. It's not too tough.
My Stereo isnt set up to have a cd changer plugged right into it. So I guess that I would have to use an FM Modulator. How do these work, And how do you put them in, or is every one different? Do they have the same high quality sound as a normal cd player or does it sound not quite as good. Thank you for replying to my question.

Hi,I have a kenwood system in my 86 and I installed the thing myself not hard just mount the changer run the wire and its donejust make sure the changer fits the stereo you have some of them have different plugs on the end and then you have to get a different wire and it is expensive. John
I haven't had any experience installing a changer(but I plan to get experience very quickly). however just based off of what I have read from cruthfield, a changer is very easy to install, and with an FM modulator(I think that is right) hook-up it is about the same as running a very clear FM station. crutchfield reported some disturbances which were covered up by road noise.
The FM Modulator works by having the CD Changer play your CD's over a low band radio station. Example 89.1. The quality is still good, and you can change the station incase you have a radio station that low in your area.
Thanks For all your help. But I am just curious. How does the Fm modulator work, I know that it plays on a low band radio station, but how do you hook it up, or what do you do? THank you for being so helpful.

Basically the FM Modulator is built in to the controls of the CD Changer. There is a line from theis controller to the changer. Make sure the line is firmly plugged into the controller and the changer, and that's it. You have to choose the station you want it to play on, or go witht he changer's default, and that's it. End of installation.
eightysix you have a wire run from the changer. it is like an extension cord. you unplug the antenna wire from your radio into the wire from the changer then plug the changer wire into the radio where the antenna had een.
I have 97 Explorer. I have the stereo system that supports the CD Changer. I am trying to understand what it will take to put in a CD Changer and what are the pros and cons of some of the changers that can be purchased.
My neighbor has same year Explorer with the Changer and I was able to look at the wiring harness and indeed, she has the extra connector for the changer. Does this connector only support the FORD changer? Or are there other changers that can be used and give the same functionality of the OEM changer? I am/was considering an Alpine 6 CD changer...
Any input or direction to other areas that can get me an answer would be greatly appreciated.
