Ok well to start the engine in my truck was built and ran in a mustang. It is the truck in my signature. So high rpms is what it is built for and the truck will only rev to about 5200 ( my geuss the factory limiter). I installed a MSD 6AL today using the TFI wiring harness adapter from MSD and and it still wont go higher then about 5200. I only plan on going to 6000 till after this winter then 7000 for next summer. What else do i need to do to go higher? Thanx for the help.
it sounds like your cam and computer are fighting each other. The engine is being stopped before it hits its potential. Looks like you will need a chip or reprogram. I have to ask though, how long will that "mild" 302 last at 7000? Define mild.
i geuss i need to get with my cousin who built the engine. it has a trickflow cam, lightned and blue printed crank, Y303 heads that have been ported and polished. by next summer i plan on having bigger injectors, better flowing manifold, and throtle body.
Could be many things limiting the rpms, weak valve springs, a mismatched cam, insufficient intake or exhaust airflow, insufficient fuel supply, or just plain old electronic limiting. If the motor has all the right internal parts you probably need a mustang computer to get the most out of the motor, this will also allow you to connect the tuner you will need to adjust for the larger injectors.
You should attach an electric fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail and monitor the fuel pressure, if it drops at high rpms then you need more pump. If it doesn't then you are probably hitting 100% duty cycle on the injector. Bumping the fule pressure with an adjustable FPR is a cheap way to test this and stretch the injector capacity some.
