Well, if you've seen any of my other threads on the topic.... my stupid basement flooded.
But good news came my way. My insurance is giving me at least (not sure of the exact number yet) 5 grand to pay for the carpet, drywall, clothes, and even the time it took me to clean the basement since I did it myself. YaY!!!
So.. no more carpet... i'm going to stain the concrete (won't cost me more than a couple hundred and won't have to worry about water again)
And there was a nice ledge that goes around the basement. So I took all the drywall below that ledge off. I think it looks fine like that. Concrete bottom, shelf and drywall above. So I don't think I'm going to be spending any money on drywall.
So besides sealing some minor cracks and buying myself some new clothes... I've got quite a bit of extra money and I'm thinking about putting a pool table down there. Nothing fancy or expensive, because it probably won't be used much.
So anyway my question, are there any places to find cheap pool tables?
only place I've really seen in my area is wal-mart. And Blain usually has them, but it must only be around christmas time because they don't have any on their website now.
Like I said... I'm not looking for anything fancy... just something cheap.. My basement just flooded I'm not gonna throw a 5 grand table down there. Just a decent little gameroom/bar for me and my friends, and one more place for me to escape from the wife and kid for awhile.
Go to a bar and ask who they rent their video games from. Those companies usually have pool tables, too, and may have some for sale. I acquired a pinball machine this way, but I know the place also sold (used) tables. The only problem with my pinball machine was it reeked of cigarette smoke. The smell is all gone now, after several years.
Not sure on 7 or 8 foot yet. Pretty much depends on the prices I see.
I'll have to check the local vendors and see if they have any used tables for sale.
then again... some of the tables in the bars around here... I'm not sure if I'd want that thing in my house. LOL
dang.. everybody's getting rid of one in your area.
Well, I think I found one in the local swap sheet. FOR FREE... I gotta go take a look at it tommorrow. Didn't say much in the ad besides it needs new felt.
I don't know if it's slate or not. Honestley it doesn't matter to me. I learned how to play pool on an OLD table in my great grandparents basement that had an old warped plywood table, I really wouldn't bother me to play like that again....
....at least nobody would beat me on my own table... i'd know where all the rises and dip in the table are.
Bar tables (which is what I recommend) are typically solid slate, though much thinner than "home" tables. The good news is they are cheaper to move, level, cover etc. Plus they are less susceptible to moisture / humidity issues that may occur in your basement. Plus, it will make you a better shooter on the tables at bars you may frequent.
Home style tables are prettier and bigger. Cost more up front and to recover later. Typically comes in three piece slates. The slates are just over 1 inch thick as I recall.
Way back in my younger days my step-dad and I moved & installed tables of all kinds for private owners plus we recovered tables for bars and homes. Whatever you decide to do I cannot emphasize enough NOT to use red felt. It is an eye killer. In addition, it is very important to keep your table covered when not in use.
So I obviously recommend the bar tables. Besides, when your buds come over you tell them to bring lots of quarters....

Good luck and enjoy.
