keeps cutting off

keeps cutting off
hello all
have 82 f150 300 auto with dual tanks that has got me stumped
the motor will shut off driveing down road and to get it running again i switch the gas tank selector and it starts running again. the catch is i bypassed the front tank when this started happening because i thought it was the front tank causeing the problem so the switch isnt really switching anything but the gas gauge
when this first started happening i would turn off ignition switch and turn back on creating a backfire that has ruined my new muffler and blew out the donut gasket on exhaust manifold
this leads me to think its tank related but i cant figure why switching selector would cause it to run again
i am going to run a wire off coil neg to a light bulb in cab to deternine if i am loseing spark and if light keeps blinking it would have to be fuel related, right
anyone with ideas i sure would appreciate them all

I do not believe it's fuel related. If you have a fuel delivery problem, and the carb starts running dry, it usually coughs and sputters and takes a long time to recover, if it even keeps running. An electrical problem with a loose connection will be very quick to recover, and then lose it again.
