I have a 2002 f-350 with a 8 inch lift with 37 inch tires,I drove 160 mi and used about 3/4 of a tank,I pull a 25 ft toy box with a waverunner and trailer inside and a yamaha rhino in the back of my truck.I was concerned about the fuel consumption, does this sound normal? also the speedo has not been recalibrated and I think it has some type of program on it right now but i am not sure as I bought it used and the dealer did not know.My next question is what do I do to get the best fuel mileage I keep hearing about the DP TUNER and it sounds really good I just dont know anything about it and all my buddies that have diesels have not heard of it either,so I just dont know what to do,could someone really explain how this thing works and how it will benefit me.
The Dp tuner is an after market "programmer" that alters the way that your trucks computer tell it to run, as does all the others. The difference between DP and the others is that DP is custom set up for your truck. You cannot just buy one. When you order one from DP you have to answer some questions about your truck and driving habits, also any mods that you may have.
As far as your fuel mileage, them big tires aren't helping!!!!
Is your oil full & clean? Air filter ok? Have you cleaned the EBTyet? What about tire pressure? These little thing can all contribute to you lower mpg's.
Don't think you going to have much luck with that lift and tires. I had really good gas miledge until I got 4" lift and 315's tires. I imagine the 2008 mirrors didn't help out either. Jody might be able to 1 or 2 mpg but that is skeptical. I have DP and love it for the other things then fuel economy.
I think it has alot to do with the weight your hauling and pulling, mileage is almost cut in half when i,m towing my 31 foot TT. Are you mashing on it to go instead of a gradule pull from starts and stops? Welcome to FTE also..
The best thing I can say about my DP Tuner is I have a hell of a lot more power with the same amount of fuel consumption. If I could keep my foot out of it, I may could do better, but I usually get arournd 14 to 17 pulling the boat or running empty. The load you had on the truck is not very fuel friendly to begin with. Check the stuff listed, make sure all your intake boots are tight and air filter is in good shape. A set of gauges would help you see what is going on correct the problem earlier. Without knowing your boost and egts, it will be a guess unless something is way off. How many gallons do you think you used? Depending on what tank you have, sounds like you got around 10-12 mpg. Not good, but depending on you driving, stuff mentioned above, and locations pulled and tire size, might be in line.
No I gradually get it up to speed and dont drive any faster than 60 mph,I drive as conservative as possible with the way fuel prices are and thank you everybody for your input.
Nice observation Barry, and its the truth. Before i got my chip the gears used to wind out costing me alot of fuel, then got the chip and i go through the gears faster, boom, boom, boom. After some cosmetic,s(air intake, gauges, exhaust) go for the DP Tuner or the TW tunes like everybody suggest.
Gauges- $300-400, DP-Tuner-$200-?? depending on what and how many tunes you want up to 15 at $45 each. Intake, $35+/- for 6637. So for around $700.00 give or take, you will rule the road and be able to see what your truck is doing. And with a little luck, improve you mileage.
DP-Tuner site is in my sig and for a basic setup with a few tunes will run you about $400, so the total will be closer to $800
My DP tuner gained me a whole lot of fun and about 1.5-2 MPG .. Thats hand calculated milage... no using onboard POS ! I also do not have my speedo callibrated.. and when I calculated i did not take that into consideration ... I was at 19.67MPH on my last haul. The trip before that I got 18.9 with about 3500lbs in the truck !

Don't forget about the $300 for the 4" or 5" exhaust from the turbo back. To help lessen the EGTs
