When I am idle in my 2001 Edge, the RPMs drop and pick up. This most often happens when the AC is on. What do I need to look at to fix the problem. I am no mechanic by far, but can find my way under the hood with a little guidence. Thanks in advance
I had this same problem. 2001 Edge V6 4.0L Manual 77,000 2WD Reg Cab
I ran the truck and AC for about 15 minutes and then stopped for lunch. When I restarted it the engine wouldn't idle correctly and the AC stopped working. The idle would dropped from 1000 rpm to zero and then runs up to 1000 again.
I hobbled home and hours later it seemed to work ok but I didn't drive it for a long time just tried it out to see if it was working correctly. I live in Las Vegas and the AC is really necessary. I had just filled up at a new gas station and I think I might have overfilled the tank or the fuel filter might be clogged. It might have something to do with the AC because it comes and goes. It's not a vacuum leak because that's not intermitent. The AC was on Max AC when I turned the engine off for lunch and that might have something to do with the problem. I usually try to run the engine with the AC off for a while before turning off the engine.
The Idle air controller (IAC) gets dirty, which makes it respond sluggishly. You can try cleaning it with TB cleaner. Do not scrub it. You can also soak it in 90% isopropyl alcohol overnight. If that doesn't fix it, then you have to replace it. If the IAC is not the problem, a vacuum leak or a defective MAF are the next most likely suspects.
