I would like to add a navigation unit to my 05 XLT. I know there are may aftermarket units available, but I really want to keep the factory look. Was there a Navigation option offered on 05's? If not are there any other ford models that would work that wouldn't need a tremendous amount of technical knowledge. I pretty sure a plug and play is out, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Depends on what ur looking for. If you want a factory look, you could go w/ an aftermarket dbl din stereo w/ navigation, though that can get pretty pricey. What kind of truck do you have? Nevermind I see you have a 250. As far as aftermarket goes, Kenwood has some nice models that look factory that are powered by Garmin navigation which is supposed to be one of the best, most starting at around $700 and then it goes up. If you want to save money then you'll be forced to go with a plug-n-play. Again, depends on what u r looking for and how much u want to spend. There are plenty of options out there. I have a single din JVC unit w/ navigation that I like, but they just came out with a dbl din 7" touch screen unit I that think I'm going to like better, so I'm going to get that.
I installed an Eclipse AVN-7000 in my 05 F250SD. It replaced the factory cd/radio. The new unit came with mounting hardware which added an extra slot for holding more junk. lol
The first pic shows the touch screen for the audio, the second shows the navigation, and the last shows the unit with the screen closed. You can use the audio and all of the audio functions with the screen closed. Click on image for larger picture.
The Eclipse was pricey compared to today's prices which have come down. It has CD/DVD/AM-FM/Sat. Inputs/
The nav uses the same maps that most all other nav units use. There are rural roads that I have traveled most of my life which this unit knows the names for each.lol
Shows a lot of detail, like rivers, lakes, cemeteries(ut oh) in addidion to you being able to select certain poi's like gas stations, restaurants, shopping malls, etc.
The best nav software by far is the DeLorme that I have on my lappy.
so aftermarket is the only way to go? There aren't any ford models that would work? I can't swap out a navigation from an Excursion or an explorer or something?
Personally I think the Pioneer units are the best bang for your bucks. But that's just my opinion. If I were to replace my Eclipse unit it would be with a Pioneer HD based unit.

You could, but for the money you are probably going to spend you would be better off with an aftermarket unit like Pioneer or Kenwood
Yes it is possible to install a factory nav. unit. I have a install link from an 05 F150 if you are interested. Email me ruben7049 at yahoo dot com. I do not want to post it here because it is from another forum.
I'm pretty sure the navigatio units from the 08 Super Duty will install in the same location as your current radio, and the wiring will match. However, you will also have to get hold of the GPS antenna and install it as well.
If you buy used you might be able to do this for a reasonable price. If you are buying new form a dealer it is going to run over $2000 I believe.
This is why most of us recommend going with an aftermarket unit. For the same amount of money as the factory stuff you can get a much nicer unit with a lot more features. Here is a picture of my Kenwood DDX-6019 installed. I would highly recommend buying one of the Kenwood DNX series units if you decide to go aftermarket.
i have the eclipse avn5510, and i love it. it has two separate drives...one for the nav disc or dvd movie, and the other for cd/mp3. most other non-eclipse a/m ones have one drive. i paid $1695 installed a few years back, but that included modules to keep my steering wheel controls and rear dvd player. can probably be done for cheaper now.
