burning wiring

THe other day i started my truck (89 7.3) and selled something burning. I poped the hood and found a plug that looks like it goes to the glow plugs had melted. I tried to start it again and she fired like always but the melted plug was very hot and a fuseable link further down was smoking. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Is the plug you are talking about close to the dip stick?

If your plug has the 2 orange and black wires yes that is a known problem connection. The known remedy is to cut each (orange/black) wire and splice them together outside the connector.

Yeah it does have two orange and black wires. Both on the same side. The plug is located on the fender by the dipstick. It seems to only get hot when the glowplugs are heating up for the start then they cool down.

I believe i had the same problem you had. I have a picture let us know if this is the connection you are referring to? I believe if you bypass that whole connection you will remedy that problem, or you could just do it to the wire that burned up, this is caused by a bad connection within the wiring connector. Also if you like to keep the connector you could go to a local parts store and get a new one.

86 Engine connector color codes

The two large orange wires are power to the glow plugs.
Red with green stripe is the ignition circuit.
Red with white stripe coolant temp
White with red stripe oil pressure
Red with black stripe is the engine overheat light
Purple is the trigger wire for the glow plug relay

That photo is from when I was experiencing that problem, it has been resolved. All I did was by pass the melted wire from that connector.
