I have 37,000 miles on my 2006 that I bought in October 2006. It has a 6.0, crew cab, and 8' bed. It HAS the HD towing package (12,500 lb I think), 4x4, 3.72 LS diff. Since I bought it in the fall, wasn't much need to use the air conditioner. It does NOT have the dual zone.
I first used the air May 2007 when I was in southern California. Found out the cockpit did NOT feel comfortable til after I had driven about 25 miles. Also found out on my way home, I was headed east on I-10 up that LONG incline of a mountain. the cockpit had been cool, but during the assent, my wife and I actually started to sweat. I was like the compressor had shut down...like a little 4 cyl gas burner. It is like the engine doesn't have the guts to pull the load AND the air conditioner!
Does this have a compressor cut-out on it? And can it be defeated?
Currently in Homestead, FL. I have been here a year. Local Ford dealership doesn't have my confidence on diesels. Been there once...enough.
you should find a competent dealer near you to check over your a/c system, could be a leak in it somewhere or maybe its even just straight up low from the factory?
I don't believe there is an A/C cut out. Since it's an A/C issue the service department would probably not put a Certified 6.0 Tech on the job anyway, unless that Tech had nothing else to work on. As rollerstud posted, find a competent dealer Tech.
BTW, D8Chumley had a recent post on the A/C compressor line getting a hole rubbed in it by the battery tray. Maybe take a look in that area for a problem.
What color is your trucks exteriro/interior. My truck is all black with a Gray interior and I know even in the spring time if I let it sit outside it takes a while to cool down the whole cab. I dodnt know what the miles would be but it could take up to 15 minuites to get it cool. I know that in the heat of the summer up here, which is nothing compared to what you get I am sure, if I leave it in auto @ 60 degrees the fan may not come down for over 1/2 hour or so. My F-150 was worse and that was only an extended cab. Like previously stated check out D8's post. I found that my hose was rubbing slightly, didnt rub through, so I insulated it and all should be fine.
If all else fails find yourself a good service dept. I drive about 25-30 miles to have my truck serviced. I know it will be done correctly tho.
You can look at the A/C system yourself for leaks. Just check all the hoses and fittings that you can see, if there is a leak it will look like oil sitting on the hose, if it has had Dye added to the system at the factory it may even look lime green. Make sure to look in the grill and see the condensor. If that is leaking it will be oily and usually have a lot of debris stuck to it. They usually leak in the corners or at seams. Also if you operate in a dusty enviroment remove the black plastic rad. shroud and look between the intercooler, radiator, & condensor and make sure there isnt a lot of dirt and stuff blocking air flow. If there is just use a hose to clean it. Just spray it until its clean. Just dont use a straight stream as you will damage the fins.

Would a tuner help the problem?
Thanks for help guys.
Make sure you use recirculate or max a/c to cool the truck quicker. If you don't, you suck in all the hot air from the bottom of the windshield.
It does sound like you need the system recharged.
Also be sure to use your a/c (you can left the heat control on, you don't have to freeze yourself) for at least 15 minutes a month even during the colder months. This keeps the seals from drying out and circulates the oil and freon around the system prolonging it's life.
When you use the the defroster in the winter it will cycle the A/C compressor. It not only allows the compressor to cycle it also drys the air hitting the windshield.
You have a problem and no a performance tuner will not repair an a/c concern. Have you dealer check it out..The compressor will shut off if it makes too much or too little pressure, this is controlled my the pcm and uses the input pressure sensors to read low and high side pressures.
Thanks to you all. Sarge261, and 18vtx00. appreciate the info. I only run the air in Max air. For those of you that DON't know already, when you place air conditioning in MAX AIR, the temperature controller does not really function. It doesn't change the temp. A real bummer for a person that has allergies as I do. It is in the owners manual!
Time wise Brad. Takes best part of half an hour to cool down.
And Sarge, it is Torodore Red (maroon) outside and tan/beige inside. Glass is not tinted too much, that would help.
18vtx00, Is there a cutout on this through the PCM module? Or is the cutting out most likely due to low refrigerant?
Thanks

yes it will not make enough low pressure, usually less than 15-20Psi and the compressor will not cycle or cycle frequently causing warm or slightly cool air.30-45psi on the low side is normal for most vehicles w/ and R134a system.
My other truck was Dark Toradeur Red, I had the windows tinted and used a Sun shade in the front window to keep the sun out. I have yet to tint the windows on my current truck but its on the list. I agree with above. Get it in and have it checked. even if you have to travel a bit to get it to a reputable dealer. Just post here and ask around. I am sure there is one in the area.
It shouldnt take 1/2 hour to cool down. I know mine doesnt and its a crew cab. Get it checked out.
