My Ex has 67K and should have the coolant changed. How thorough of a flush is really necessary? I'd prefer to do it myself, but if it's a time consuming task, I may elect to have a shop do it.
If I just drain the radiator and block is that sufficient? Or should I follow a more thorough procedure?
If you plan on upgrading to an Extended Life Coolant (ELC) then you need a thorough coolant flush, to include (in my opinion) pulling the drain plugs on each side of the block.
When my water pump went south, I did a complete and thorough flush, bolted on the replacement pump (Napa), installed the coolant filter bypass setup, 203 degree thermo, and billet thermo housing (Dieselsite), then filled it with Chevron Delo ELC.
Now I'm set for the life of my rig. I'll never have to check my coolant with test strips as long as I own it.

EDIT. Sorry, I just saw you have a gasser, not a smoker. Nevermind! LOL
How much of the coolant would a simple radiator drain get? 50%?
In theory then.. if I drained and filled, then drained again and filled, I would have replaced 75%. If I drained and filled a 3rd time I'd be up to 87.5%.
That seems like a pretty simple, yet quite effective way to do a 87.5% flush.
