Stalling while driving

I have a 96 Ford F350 that quit running while driving. Engine cranks but won't start. I can hear the fuel pump run when the ignition is turned on. Pulled out a spark plug and saw spark but the plug was not wet with fuel when it was removed. I wait a while and it will start up again. It seems to do it when going slow or foot off acelerator. Any ideas/suggestions???

Okay, I have a clue for you. I had a very similar problem last week with an E350 Van (85 model) that had duel tanks and electric fuel pumps. It would run about 15 to 17 minutes, then die. Long story short, after trying all the more obvious things, it was the electronic (magnetic) sensor inside the distributor (I'd installed a new distributor about 2 years ago, so I didn't think that could possibly be where the problem was, but it was.). It is that part with the wires coming out of it (stator maybe, I forgot what it was called and box is at my other place???). Apparently when those get HOT, they sometimes quit transferring current. It was the trickiest electrical problem that I ever had to trace. Ran cold, died hot, cooled off, and ran perfect for oh, about another 15 minutes then dead. Good luck with your trace.

I think you hit the nail on the head. After two mechanics, two ignition modules, fuel filter, I finally went to a dealership. They diagnosed it as the ignition coil, even that was diagnosed wrong. It was the staor and wires like you pointed out. It was caught by a fluke by the dealer mechanic. I didn't understand when he explained it. I'm just glad it was found. The service guy said I could have been chasing this for a long time and spent big bucks. As if their bill wasn't already big.

I hope this thread helps others.

Thumbs up

Thanks, and nice to see you have sense of humor about it, because that one was a PIA to find. I too had replaced a coil (they are sometimes known to fail when hot), and one ignition module. Would have considered distributor sooner, I think, had it not only had like 10K miles on it, but rebuilt stuff just doesn't seem to hold up I guess. When I saw your thread last week I thought "wow, this guy has ths same stupid problem I have, I want to see the answers". But no one gave you and answer. Soooo, after I figured it out, and I finally got my ID for this site, I felt like you did, share the information, maybe someone else can benefit from our frustrations.

Enjoy your Ford experiences. Dave M, from Southwest Iowa. C ya
