Electronic 4x4 Questions

Hi everyone...

I have a 2000 Excursion, 7.3psd, stock, and I had some questions about the four wheel drive system.

It seems the electronic 4x4 switching is broken. I cant engage the four wheel drive system via the dash button.

I can however manually lock those front hubs. The question is... How hard should it be to turn those hubs??

The reason I ask is because is was very hard to turn them and they feel like there is a pound of congealed glue in them.

When the electronic system is activated does it actually have to turn those hubs? If it does, I'm not surprised it can't do it. I could barely turn them manually.

So everyone, what can I do to fix the electronic side of my four wheel drive system.

Thanks in Advance
GDC

I cant answer your question on what to do but I can answer about the manual hubs. They should turn very easy! Just this past weekend we played with the 4x4 and we did the manual lock for fun and they turned very easy. Hope someone on here can give you some answers.

the hubs should turn easily. They have to be cleaned and lubed. check out this site for the process on doing so. Welcome to guzzle's Ford PSD Web Page , under maintenance section.

Problem with the in dash switch could be switch, fuse, or with the vacuum system(they use ESOF system to engage the 4x4 from dash switch). Also check the guzzle site under needle bearing lube, he has a small write up on the ESOF system. To narrow down to the vacuum system, u would also have problems with u air conditioning or heating system.

I have had no problems with mine, but have ordered the parts and caliper pins and will be lubin the bearings, auto lock hubs and replacing caliper pins next week. Good luck.
