i read somewhere you can re curve your dizzy if you delete the smog stuff, i sealed my EGR off because i don't even want it in my engine, but keeping the cat and A.I.R. system. If this question holds true, can i re curve the timing with the stock one or am i gonna have to buy a new dizzy?
I need the emissions stuff "hooked up" because i live in emissions mandatory state (curse you, Nevada).
With the EGR unhooked, you will need less advance, because the inert gases fed by the EGR actually cool the air/fuel charge in the cylinders which helps keep detonation down.
The inert gasses don't burn like the oxygen in the air, so you should have a lean condition (more oxygen in the combustion chamber) after losing the EGR. Less timing would cure detonation, but you'd be better served re-jetting your carb and timing the engine as usual.
You should be able to re-curve the stock distributor if you've got a selection of springs. The weights are stamped with numbers indicating total mechanical advance and you can bend the stops to change that a bit. Lots of trial and error with the timing light...
thanks for the replies guys, its got me thinking how to do this. I got a 1981 wich has vacuum advance... or does it also have mechanical? distributors are new to me, so be prepared to answer some questions
