I have a horrible winding noise that gets louder and faster as I drive. If I engage 4x4 High the noise instantly goes away. I disengage and within seconds the winding noise comes back. It's horrible and getting worse. I have a feeling something is slipping in the 4x4 transfer case when I switch back to 4x2. I cant go on with this so I need to know if anyone has a clue what's going on here? Please help me!
Your IWE hubs are bad...or your vacuum pump...or the lines from the pump to the IWE
take it to Ford. The front hubs are vacuum actuated. When vacuum is applied, the truck is 2wd. When vacuum is released, the hubs engage and your 1/2 way to 4x4.
so basically the front hubs aren't having a vacuum drawn, so it's engageing the front hubs. Do not wait to fix. This can escalate quickly to an expensive fix
Like the previous reply, go to a Ford dealership. I had an ungodly rattle/winding/clank in my 06' that sounded like a wheel or major part was going to pass me on the road. The dealer found there was a TSB, technical service bulletin, about the vacuum relay that engages the 4WD. Like yours it went away in 4X4 mode. Once they replaced it all was fine.
Should you find the problem matches mine it was of no cost to me. Parts replaced under a TSB are out of the dealers or Ford's pocket. You didn't mention the year of your truck. My situation was still under the warranty timeframe but I don't think that mattered because of the TSB. Don't know for sure, sorry.
Hey guys, new guy here both to 4x4's and the forum. I have an 05 and mine has started making the noise but not consistenly, just bought the extended warranty on the newly aquired truck and will probably take it in on monday. About how long will they need my truck to fix this problem? You can set my truck on fire and roll it down a hill, but I still wouldn't trade it for a coupe de ville for 2 reasons I like trucks, and dont like GM products so much. Anyway, this is a great forum and am glad to have found it.
I dropped mine of at 9:AM and was called to pick it up at 3:PM. The TSB calls for replacement of this relay that either engages 4wd or keeps it from engaging. I imagine it could cause an expensive problem if it engaged at 70 mph or decided to disengage on a slippery hill.
