Im swapping to carb in my 87 F150 with a 5.0. Would a stock distributor from an earlier year work. I have a 81 model distributor, would that work? If not what would.
Theoretically any 289/302 dizzy will work, although I'd go with the Duraspark II one and the corresponding ignition module. Can't remember what year the switch from Duraspark I happened, somewhere around 1980 IIRC.
Your 81 distributor will work fine. You can run a crane cams ignition box if you want. I am running one in my truck with a 429 and my car with a 460. They both have a stock electronic distributor and you just have to hook up the 2 wires for that and the power wires for the box, and it came with a high powered e-coil. Been running it in my 73 tbird for over 10 years now with no problems.
any stock distriburor for your engine with 2 wires will work. Duraspark was introduced in 72 on select Lincolns, and 73 for all FoMoCo vehicles, in 75, Lincoln once again got an upgrade in ignition, FoMoCo followed in 76. The only difference in Duraspark and Duraspark II is that DII turns off current to the coil when the key is on and the engine isn't running. There is also another ignition module out there. It is designated DII, but AKA the Unified Module ignition -UMI- it has a yellow gromet and 3 sets of wires; power, distributor/coil, and altitude sensor. Although not sure what it was developed for, I have yet to come across one which doesnt give trouble
as far as Thick Film Ignition -TFI- I have seen them on as early as 1982, this distributor will have a rectangular box below the cap with a 6-wire connector.
