what controls the vacum on a 96 ford explorer v6 4.0 it has the differential pressure feedback egr system (DPFE) please anyone help is greatly appricated
I just fixed my wifes car because of code 0401. If you have that code check the small hose at the DPFE and see if its clogged. check both hoses, the little one on the wifes car had yellow crap in it and the hose nipple was corroded partially away with it.
I removed the hose and ran a coat hanger, then compressed air through it and replaced the DPFE sensor. No more surging, no more doggy performance and no more check engine light.
<i>what controls the vacum on a 96 ford explorer v6 4.0 it</i>
<u>The EVR mounted right behind it.</u>
That's not right, actually the EVR controls the EGR valve, nothing controls the DPFE sensor, the DPFE sensor only reports the EGR valve's "position" to the EEC. Tells it if it opens and how far when it's open as I understand it.
Wanted to add that the top vacuum port of the EVR should be fairly easy to blow air through, the lower port should allow air to pass but feel restricted when you try to blow through it. If its real easy to blow through both ports it's probably bad and needs replaced.
To test the EGR valve disconnect the vacuum line at the EGR valve and plug the line. Disconnect the wire from the idle air control. Start the car, It should idle smooth without attempting to stall or at a very high idle. If it wants to die create a small vacuum leak so it idles near normally.
Note the idle speed (connect a tach if necessary) now apply 5-10in hg of vacuum to the EGR valve, the idle should drop 100rpms or more then return the the previously noted speed once the vacuum source is removed from the EGR valve. If it does the EGR valve is working.
the vacum line will hold the egr open when i connect it but when i take the vacum line off the egr the car will idle fine so i am getting a p401 insuufent flow i know the egr is good i just need to know what the the vacum line when to open and close
