C6 to AOD Swap

I have a 1988 F150 302 4x4 with a C6, I would like to swap it with the AOD. Will a AOD from a 4x4 donor truck bolt right in and what else might I need to complete the swap?

Don

Not sure about direct bolt in, but AOD available in 4x4 model. '88-93s had some of the bugs worked out, you would be well served to beef it up.

Some dims here, looks like AOD is shorter.

TCI - TECHNICAL INFORMATION: Transmission Dimensions

Maybe you can contact them for advice, and they sell a trans for $2000 that would probably work....*

Other AOD info.

AOD Transmission from PATC, AOD Transmissions

AOD Performance Products - Baumann Electronic Controls

www.CKPerformance.com

* imo, if you just want to go get a $100 trans and bolt it in, save yourself the trouble.

Also, will your gearing allow your engine to pull the OD? Don't expect an overall fuel savings of 20% just because you get a 20% or so OD....

I have 3.55 gears and it just seems to be revving to high at hiway speeds. 3000rpms at 65mph. I was also thinking of going to a taller tire, it has the stock 235/75's on it now

This here is a calculator for rpm/mph. Last one is for tire size to diameter.

Put some numbers in here and see what a little taller tire will do.

Novak Conversions - Gearing & Gearing Math for Jeeps

According to the caculator, your tires should be 29 inches & you should be turning 2673 rpm at 65, give it 200 or so for the TC slip, so if you are at 3000, your speed is wrong, ratio is different or tires aren't 29 inchs.

31s would run 2501 + tc slip. That would seem to be the limit for a 302 imo, ymmv.

BTW, the 31s are going to soak up some power unless you can find a skinny, hard tire that tall. Something like AT 31-10.50 x 15s are probably going to eat up all the gas the rpm change saves.
