Spent yesterday pulling up a few mountains from Phoenix to Page, AZ. Have my Edge programer set at level II (60HP), have my Goldwing in the bed and a small trailer(that I pull with the GW) hooked up. Maybe have 3000 lbs of weight pulled and in the bed. Cruise usually set at 2000 RPM and for the most part nothing changes until a long uphill pull, then the EGT's start climbing and hit 1100 pretty fast.(In OD) I have noticed that if I get the RPM's up in the 2200 (OD off) range the EGT's drop back into the 900's but what is that doing to the MPG? Is it better to feather the go pedal and keep the EGT's below 1100 or go ahead and drop in the lower gear and bring the RPM's up? Might go up another level on the programer. It worked pulling the toyhauler, but thought with the lighter load a less HP setting would give better MPG. Hate having to drive for the MPG (or GPH). Did get some long coasts on the downhills. Any problems (other than legal) with doing that? Have a 99 F350 CC DWR 2WD R100 auto.
Thanks,
I made the same tow last weekend from Flagstaff to Page......and noticed the EGT's would climb faster if I had it in overdrive and the rpm's got anywhere below 2000. It causes the engine to lug, and takes it out of its optimum power range. I could take it out of overdrive into direct drive, rpm's would be up there, but egt's were hovering in the 900* range instead of 11-1200* for me. Towed a bit more weight then you, around 5500-6000lbs total with the boat loaded.
I noticed the same thing in OD and I always let it shift back down into 3rd and let the TC lock up, It was putting right aboput 2000 RPM's, where I had the power to keep up on the hills with my dads 6.0. It shouldnt kill your millage to bad. I wasnt worried about mine when towing because im towing 8000-9000 lbs and I know its goin to go down.
Keep that turbo spinning and your EGT's will stay lower! I learned that just like you guys did but, I called Jody at DP tuner just to make sure I was correct, he concurred with my findings. RPMs up = EGTs down with a SD turbo.
