hi im new too this site
i had a a questoin
i have a 1979 f150 4x4 im thinkin of puttin a 300 inline 6 in it and im wanting to run 35" tires i was told that i would beable make this work by changing the gearing....can enyone help me out with what gearing id have too go with???????
thnks
Welcome alex, to FTE, it all depends on your engine mods and transmission, what gears you need, more than likely you will want about 4.10s. The 300 is a GREAT engine, and more than capable of anything you might want or need. Welcome again to a great source of info. BTW, I have a77 4x4 with a 351Measly, w/3.50 gear sets and 33's, if I was to go to 35's I would definately drop to 4.10s.
awsome thanks i have a c4 auto for it?????
umm i got another questoin have u ever heard of or delt with or know somone who has delt with lmc trucks???????
or if there is enywhere eles i can get parts like body parts and interoir parts etc??????
I have a 300 Inline 6 in my truck. everyone that you will talk to will tell you that they are the best engines Ford ever made.
once again LMC isn't a sponsor of this site so use the names that JBrad told you about. also LMC's sheetmetal is cheap and thin. about 2 weeks ago I heard a guy say that one time he washed his truck with an LMC door on the truck. he made a dent in his door.......that's how thin the metal is.
i wouldnt over gear it because the 300 isnt really a screamer and it makes peak torque near 1800 rpms or something stupidly low like that.....i guess it depends if you plan on using it on the highway alot or mostly in the woods and backroads.
well i wanna amke it an every day driver so yea some highway milles and liek camping and then 4x4ing ofcourse
but i wanna put a 6 inch suspensoin lift on 35s
so im havin too change the gearing some but im not a hundered percent sure on what i should go with
35s are going to be a bit big. Despite the off-idle torque, the 6 isn't some mountain motor. The heavier the tire/wheel, the slower/doggier it will be regardless of gear.
What gear do you have now?
You can go here and put your numbers in and determine rpm/mph. Keep in mind your low range will run you up to what, 45 mph or so? So if you are bit tall on the street for mph, your TC will be your friend on the dirt.
well i have had i think 2 guys tell me that i should be able too go with the 35s?????
and i think my gears are a 3:55
and i dont quite follow u on the hole "You can go here and put your numbers in and determine rpm/mph. Keep in mind your low range will run you up to what, 45 mph or so? So if you are bit tall on the street for mph, your TC will be your friend on the dirt."
ive got a 78 4wd with a 300 and a 4spd on 35's with stock gears and im more than happy with the way it pulls on the trails and on the road. But if its a 4 spd, dont put a auto behind it thats a 300's kryptonite, they dont pull half as good as a 4pd.

the "go here" refers to the link for calculating rpm/mph to see the effect of different gear/tire combs.
You can go with 35s, but they are heavy and tall and it's more for the motor to overcome. Add 50 lbs in the bed, the motor does not notice. Add 50 lbs to the rollling assembly, the motor notices big time.
