ive got a 74 f100 302. Pulled the distributor and the oil pump shaft came up. Cant get it to go back in place. Have had this problem before but never this much trouble getting it to drop back into place. Any tips, tricks, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
There should have been a little sliding clip to prevent that but not everybody puts them on.
You should be able to drop it back in unless that clip fell off and is in the way, use a small flashlight and take a look down there, if you can see it a small magnet should get it but if it falls in it shouldn't hurt anything.
I'm not too sure what to tell you, I've had this problem lots of times and the rod always went back in ok.
Make sure there is nothing in the top of the pump and put some pressure on it, not a lot though. Check the rod for any deformity as well. This should be an easy thing.
Also if your not aware don't worry about turning the pump while your doing this, it has nothing to do with the timing.
Try slipping a pice of plastic tube over the end of the shaft to use as a handle, that may help you to manuver the shaft into the pump. To remove plastic tube apply compressed air to the other end, it should then pop off.
Problem solved. After dropping another shaft in the oil pan, I just welded the shaft to the b ottom of the distributor enough to hold it into place. Slid right in. Thanks for the suggestions.
