If it's just an axle (no springs, etc) I think you'll have better luck banging together a plywood crate. As for quotes, a Google search for "LTL QUOTE" will give you more options than you can handle.
Fed Ex has a LTL/Freight division that's pretty reasonable. I'd expect an axle to cost around $75-100 to ship. If you have to international, DHL Freight is pretty reasonable.
Definatly build a crate (Box) to ship the axle. Get prices from several trucking outfits like Yellow, Roadway and etc. There are a lot of companies out there that ship, just got to look. I think FedEx ground could ship it, if memory serves me correct I think FedEx bought out RPS. Across country, I'd expect about $200+ to ship it and another $50+ to make a crate. Freight isn't cheap.
RPS is used for Fedex Ground shipping. The freight company they bought was American Freight. I want to say Fedex grounds limit is around 150 pounds, and they have a size limit which the axle should be larger than.
I drive for a freight carrier. Try using freightqoute.com . They have a hefty discount with alot of freight carriers. If this a used axle . Make sure you let them know that. You will get a better rate.Make sure you secure it to a plallet that is sturdy enough to support the weight and size of the axle. Also ..Will this be shipped to a residence or a business? Residences usually get tacked on a extra charge. Will the consignee have a way to unload the pallet? If not you will need to request a liftgate. Not all drivers will have liftgates on their trucks. If you dont let the carrier know .They will automatically load at there descretion. These are somethings you will need to consider to make a smooth transfer.
Good luck
but i think an 80 weighs just a bit more than a buck fifty!
Hehe, ya think? But I don't think the freight divisions of Fedex or UPS have that limit. They'll take all you got. I guess your real problem is you don't know how much the axle weighs. Sorry I can't help with that.
