I don't know how I made the mistake.

Yes, I meant to say Jody. I was talking with an associate at work named Tony, so I probably mucked it up. My bad.

Don't be hatin' on me Jody!!!! I know there are members been around here since dirt was new that have DP Tuner. I can heartily endorse Jody, too. Been involved in sales to one extent or another for 30 years. I KNOW great customer service, and DP Tuner has it!!

Ya beat me to it.

I've been running with the 40 tow, 80 tow, 80 econo, 120 race and I love it.

In my opinion, based on reading here when I researched the F5 chip and also info from the vendor when I bought it, you wouldn't hurt anything because you don't have enough supporting mods to actually use the 140. If you had Big Oil, then that 140 would really scream, but without Big Oil, the 120 versus the 140 would probably be negligible because the injectors just wouldn't be able to perform well enough.

Also, since you're in SoCal already, plan on driving out to Holtville where John Wood is located.

JW just hosted a live tuning session at his shop for Jody to tune a bunch of the PSD's. They had a great turnout.

I drove down to JW's shop from the Monterey Peninsula last December to have him install one of his hand built transmission in my Excursion. Damn does that thing rock!

That's funny. I get 18-20 with my Predator in the 85 tune. The 100 just makes the injectors rattle beyond belief...

I'm thinking about the DP Tuner also. I hear Jody's got a drive through tune now that'll shut the truck up when ordering food at the window.....

Just like the other have said, you'll love your DP. I've had to wait years to finally get one and cannot believe how I lived without it. Seriously, it's that good.

John:

I'm happy to hear you are getting 18-20 with the Predator. If you check my post at the start of the thread, I was getting better mileage with no tune than with any of the 3 I tried. Driving conditions under all tunes were the same: ~85-90% freeway, balance around town. Freeway speeds @ 70-75 with cruise control, appx 2100 rpm. Kept my foot out of it except to get up to speed when merging on freeway. My Predator, when connected, reads "booting_ford_7.3" and I have the 7r19dz crom.

Go to Diablosport's forum, and check my posts there. Same name. You can see from a lot of the other posts, as well as mine, an overwhelming lack of support for the U7170. There is a subscriber answering technical issues better than their employees!!

I am not trying to create a negative perspective of the company, just stating my personal experience. And, after dealing with Jody @ DP Tuner, the difference is night and day getting support and questions answered.

So, again, the order was placed yesterday, and it is shipping today. From Georgia to California I expect it to take a week, but I will do the install the weekend I get it (or sooner!) and post back into this thread initial impressions, and later on, mileage......

So, my DP Tuner arrived today. I unpacked it and was looking at the invoice. It lists the tunes, and a Calibration ID number VRAA6N3. My Ex has a Cal ID of VRAA7Y5. I e-mailed Jody, but since it was after 5:00 his time, I've gotten no response.

Any of you bright FTE folks who have the DP Tuner know if this will have to go back for a reflash? Or is it good to go?

I REALLY wanted to install today, but I guess patience is a virtue...

Thanks in advance for any input!!

All:

I got the e-mail reply from Jody after I had posted. Dang, Jody, isn't it your bed time??

Anyway, a couple notes and impressions.

1. Toughest part I had was getting to the cable for the PCM. I'm 6'3" 240 lbs, and NOWHERE near as flexible as I used to be, and that thing is waaay down and hidden on the Excursion. That said, I got my young nephews to assist, and besides looking for 20 minutes for the socket that dropped, it wasn't that hard.

2. Instructions are clear, concise, and easy to follow.

3. The part I was most worried about was cleaning the terminals on the board. I think I must have someone watching over me because I managed it OK. I was hating the possibility of getting it done, buttoned up, and finding out I had improperly cleaned the board. Which leads me to,,,

4. I bought the gage mount, and I am running out of time. So, until tomorrow AM, I just plugged in the F5 controller and held it. Started right up, so I took my nephews, and we did a trial run.

5. Did stock, 60 tow, and 80 economy. The 80 feels like the 100 on my Predator. Switched to 120 race, and dayam, that is sweet!!!

I'll finish the mount tomorrow, and then I'll start tracking mileage.

Jody:

Thanks a million!!! It rocks!!!!

So, I finished the install this morning. The only problem I have is the gauge mount doesn't really hold securely. My AutoMeter and pillar are press fit, and as long as it is just "hanging" there, and during program changes, it is fine. I like the idea of pulling the F5 switch and having it default to N/S, so I mounted the switch with the velcro. When I take the switch off, the effort causes the pod mount to distort, twist, and move the gauge out. Push gauge back in, and I'm good to go again.

So I'm thinking of an adhesive to apply between the gauge pod and mount to make it more secure. Anyone tried this yet? Any suggestions for a good adhesive to accomplish this task?

Thanks!!

Well, as promised, I am posting up some impressions and mileage results.

After messing around a couple days with the 120 tune () I had to get down to some testing. I've been running with the 80E tune. I've got to say, it pulls harder and has better pickup than the 100HP tune on my Predator. I can take it nice and easy, and it just has a nice, even acceleration for around town. Doesn't get to OD until after 40 mph, and then usually I have to take my foot off the feed. But merging onto the freeway, this thing feels GREAT!!!

I have a penchant for not letting the fuel get down below 1/2 tank, because with diesel $4.95 here, 44 gallons is awful hard to swallow; 20 gallons is bad enough!! I put 273 miles on the Ex since I refilled and reset. It was still registering ~ 5/8 full. I am guessing this was about 70-75% highway, and the balance around town. 16.656 gallons required, giving me a net of 16.4 mpg.(L-O-M said 19.8) Down somewhat from my 60HP tune with the Predator (17.1), but that was 85-90% highway.

It will be interesting to see what I get on my road trip to Indiana at the end of July. I will NOT be refilling as often as I am now. I want to get out, and let this beast stretch its' legs, and then see what the mileage is.

If I get a chance to do some more running that is more comparable to the driving I was doing with the Predator, I'll post up again.

In the meantime..........
