I have an 86 Ranger supercab.I was thinking of getting rid of the speaker box, and was wondering if I could take out the two rear seats and put my 10s in there. There is enough room, I just wonder about the sound quality. If this would work, does anybody know how much space I should have behind them.
I doubt you could get the sound quality to be real clean. I don't think there is not enough depth in the space to build an enclosure, and give the sub enough room behind the magnet to breathe. In the 89 I had, I built a Series 3 box on the floor with the ports firing toward the seats, not up, for 2 10" JL's, took out the jump seats, and mounted my amps with glow lights in the that space. Looked really nice and sounded great. That way I could throw bags and other junk in the back on top of the box and not hurt anything.
Thanx for the input. I am a mechanic not a stereo tech. I appreciate the knowledge. I did not think I could get the sound quality by putting them there.
You would have to build the enclosures to go behind the panel. Not that you want all the airspace to be behind the speaker, but you do need for the speaker to have at least about 6" clearance for a 10" sub.
I have been trying to find the specs and drawings I had on the Ranger Box I built, but haven't located them yet. If I do, I will send them to you...
ok concerning the entire box discussion is something i do know about, spent about a year with 2 orion xtr 10"s in ported boxes behind my seats in my 97 ranger extended cab. got really tired of that because i couldnt recline. so i put down some cash and bought a kicker solo baric l7 12" and built a custom box so that it would fit where one of my jump seats was. had to cut the molding so it would go all the way to the outer wall, but in the end it was worth it. i've also talked with some custom car audio shops and they'll the job of making a molded fiberglass box for around 750 including installation, a bit pricey for me, but it looks supernice. now about putting 2 10" opposing each other you run the risk cancelling out the sound waves, so your probably better off going either bigger or mounting the subs so they dont interfere with each other. happy hunting and take some pics when you get done with the job.
I have some other questions, but I willwait until I put everything back in the truck. This was the the first winter the truck was parked. I took everything and put it in my car bacause the canadian winters play hell on my rear quarters. Usualy around january I am putting rustproofing on the outside of the truck behind the rear wheels, the sand and salt blast all the paint off behind the rear wheels. I just painted the truck in the fall and my brother bought a different vehicle and gave me his Isuzu for doing the work and saftey on his Cougar. There is nothing like the feeling of walking out of my salt covered car and seeing my dusty truck parked in the garage. This is why I want to make the stereo look, and sound good. Because I LOVE my little RANGER.
