I am looking to but a donor truck for parts, a 79 F250 4X4. The guy sent me pics but doesn't know any info on the front axle. I am trying to get some tag info from him. But can you all distinguish if this is a D60 or a D44HD from the pics?
Hopefully your trying to buy a parts truck from someone who just honestly doesnt know what he's got rather than the all too frequent liar or fool! how often do you see ads on CL,etc where the poster calls any replaced/changed part on a half ton a "1 ton upgraded such and such" and when you see these supposed 1 ton parts, there often 3/4 or even 1/2 ton items! I'd bet that in the last 5 years or so on CL and other sources, ive seen 3 times more ads claiming 1 ton parts, than there have been 1 ton trucks built..............
The only dodge axles with a drivers side diff. are late model axles, and are very undesireable.
They have no locking hubs, an axle disconnect, and unit bearings.
Really not worth the effort.
thats a 44hd. I can see the j shaped steering arm.
So, Let me see if I got this straight:
D44HDs have a J shaped steering arm, and D60s have a straight arm, Right???
Are there any other things to look for? I am just getting into the 3/4 ton parts after years of running the 1/2 tons.
yeah 60s have a strait arm. Its easier to look at the top of the knuckle/outer C Itll have kingpins. A flat cap with 4 bolts . A 44 will be like your bronco with a balljoint

D44HD fronts have a J shaped steering arm that curves out in front of the axle held on by 3 studs and ball joints as mentioned. D60s will have the steering arm that points straight toward the passenger side front tire held on by 4 studs. The steering arm is also a king pin cap with a grease fitting.
