rear main seal

my rear main seal went out awhile ago and i've yet to fix it, as i drive it once every few months. i can tell that oil is going back into the clutch housing, but it hasn't been slipping at all, only makes a bit of noise. when the truck sits in the driveway the leak is only enough that there's a drop of oil about once a month. when i get the seal replaced, can the clutch just be sprayed out, or am i stuck with needing to replace it? it's a 97 250 w/ 460 5spd.

thanks, jason

the oil that is leaking onto the clutch is being pressed into the clutch disc with alot of force. kinda like brake pads. would you want a set of brakes that were soaked with oil? its not worth the hassle. replace the clutch, and bearings while you have the trans out. you will be happier in the long run.

Replace it only if the clutch material has been contaminated with oil - which means almost a 99% probability you will need to replace it

even then, you can get a clutch , pressure plate, and throw out bearing, and pilot bearing for a couple hundred $$$. you have to take it off anyway. being the age and miles on the truck, its just the smarter thing to do, and safer too.

are you sure it is the rear main leaking, and not something else, like turbo o-rings, hpop o-rings, or even possible the clutch slave cylinder? Certain OBS psd's had a slave that was actually inside the bellhousing.

no, i'm not sure it's the rear main, i don't know a whole about engine work and such, it seems to be located in that area.
