I recently ordered a new F350 Superduty CrewCab. I chose not to pay the $750 Ford wants for their factory CD (came with radio/tape deck), seeing as how I already have a good quality Eclipse deck and speakers.
How difficult is the swap/installation? Do I need any special parts, tools, etc? Can anyone give me some instructions as to how to go about doing this, or would I be better off to just pay a shop?
The deck swap is easy. remove the stock radio with the "Ford Stereo Removal" tools. Cost like 5 bucks at Wal-mart. After you disconnect the wiring and antenna pull the deck out. I assume that your eclispse is just a single din radio. You will need to buy a wiring harness (15$),and an install kit (15$). Just follow the directions on the mounting kit and wire harnes from there and you are set. very easy install. Front Doors. Pop off the panel where the power window control resides, disconnect wires. You will see a small bolt to remove here. Next pop off the reflector or light at the bottom of the door, there is another small bolt here as well after that lift up on the panel and there is your stock speaker. For the rear speakers, I suggest you remove your back seat, which btw can be bitch by yourself. Next, remove seat belt bolt up at the top of each side. pop off the upper back plastic panel and remove the carpeted backing, then commence to pop off the trim to get to the speakers. Be careful here. I broke two clips in my 2000 CC on this part.
Did the swap last night. Went to audio store and bought the dash kit and a wiring harness for $45. Had the kid there pop out my stock deck for me (slipped him $10 for his trouble and a six pack). I put in my deck in about half an hour. Pretty simple, just solder together the same colored wires!
Thanks for the tip and the vote of confidence, it was worth it.
