ok, i recently pout up a thread about the MAP sensor, i got that all scored away. now im having a backfire when it idles. and when i press the gas it sputters and backfires as it goes up in rpm's. i put in a new fuel regulator yesterday. and now all it does is start, run for a few secs badly and stalls. still has the backfire, any1 know what i could try to do or what the problem may be?
oh, sorry. its a 302 out of a 88 grand marqui and we ripped it apart and put all new gaskets and stuff on it, its got around 70k miles on it. and no codes were not pulled. we had a computer hooked up to it and he could not get in so it was useless. the motor was supposed to be put into a drag car, but the guy had back problems and sold to me. i just dont know whats wrong or what i should look for
OK.. so what is the motor in now?
What computer is running it?
What wiring harness are you using?
What firing order are the plugs wired for?
What is the fuel pressure?
P.S. A stock 88 5.0 would not make much of a drag race motor, do you know if the PO changed the cam or anything else internally?
How long did the vehicle you put it in sit while working on it? If the majority of the fuel
in the tank is more then 90 days old the octane point is rising and any motor will have
trouble burning 150+ octane fuel and of course the additives are going bad. Not to
mention the problem of condensation building up if the fuel tank was left with less
then a half tank and water causing it's own problems. Fill the fuel filter up with some
Iso heet and crank it for a few rotations to get the iso heet up onto the injector rail
and let it sit for a halh hour then start it up just to ensure there is no water up there.
of course put a few bottles in the tank or just drain the tank and use that fuel in your
lawn mower or add it back to the tank a gallon or two at a time.
