Have not yet found an exact answer to my problem, but close. I have a 99 f250 7.3 4x4. Once placed in 4 wheel high it will not disenge. A shift to four low requires truck to be shut off and turned back on for it to shift back to 4 high, in neutral with foot on brake of course. I feel a series of pulsations at shift motor when switch is originally moved but nothing happens. With shift motor out of vehicle seems to work the same way. All vacuum is working and all fuses and relays seem to be o.k. I use 4x4 everyday to go up the mountain I live on, prevents wheel hop. If indeed it is the shift motor is there somewhere to buy one instead of mother Ford. $500.00 where I live. Thanks for the help.
I think Dorman has them. It sure seems to me like your motor is the fault, however just to try, the next time you have it out, hose it down with WD40. You may just have a piece of debris in the windings causing your issues. Also, when you reinstall it, use a dielectric compound on all of the connectors (either a real dielectric grease of just white lithium grease.)
First thanks to ReAX, not long after I made my post tonight I went out and took the shift motor out. Then I actually took it apart and sure enough a couple of the teeth on one of the gears had broke off. I cleaned it real well and greased and new silicone on the case halves and put it back together. Worked like a new one. I know that I am only buying some time before another tooth breaks off. I will try this Dorman place ReAX refered to. Not to hard to take apart, alot of little parts and washers. The way that I am I will run it until it breaks again and then fix it. Wish there was a rebuild kit.
Dorman is a manufacture, and they are pretty good about offering replacement parts if there is an issue with the OE. I believe their website is now dormanproducts.com, but RH inc should get you to the same place.
600-805 should be the part you need. Rockauto has it for $117.79, you can paypal me the $382 difference if you like.
