I have an 02 exp.xlt and would like to add some shudder fixx,is it a diy or do I have to take it to a shop.I would rate myself 7 to 10 on doing stuff on my truck. Thanks for the advice.
I was able to do my own on my '97 (has a trans dip stick) in your '02 you might be able to disconnect the top cooler line at the radiator and pour it in from there.
Check your fluid specs, and if needed make sure that you're using Mercon V, and not just Mercon. A fluid change with Mercon V may make the problem go away. It worked on my 97 F150 that developed a very significant TC shudder.
There was a long thread in here about a year or so ago that had posts by a guy who was in the fleet maint dept for a N California municipality. Was it Sacramento? As I recall he claimed that they added a friction modifier to the trannys of all their fleet Fords. I think it was the same modifier added to the differentials??? Anyone remember that thread? I'd like to look at it again but can't find it.
I didn't see that thread here, but on the Marauder forum, the same fix has been mentioned. I would hate to use that stinky stuff anywhere else if I didn't have to.
I would talk to a Ford tech and see if they are recommending the Ford friction modifier for use in Gen 3 trannys. I know nothing about Shudder Fixx but would bet it's largely a friction modifier too.
I've used the Ford friction modifier in my Trans in my 02 Explorer & it cured the shutter I had it installed at the local dealer when my trans was serviced last year. No Shutter since.
My Local dealer is the oldest ford Dealership in the USA, & they have a fanastic service department, The reason I took my truck to them was to make sure that I got the Ford Fluid & Filter for it that was required by warrenty on my Transmission.
I had a developing shudder in my 99 mountaineer and changed the fluid and filter. After reading some of the threads here I drained the torque converter too. Mine had a plug to drain it from. After I did that the shudder went away.
