I have a 90 ranger with a 2.3 EFI 4cyl. It sits on a 87 chassis so the transmission and all the suspension are from that year. It runs fine around town but seems to have trouble at highway speeds. I can get it up to 55 60 or maybe 65 in forth gear but it can't hold that speed when I shift to fifth. If I mash the gas it doesn't accelerate or pick up rpms. Because It doesn't surge and I feel no noticeable slippage in other gears I'm inclined to believe it is not the clutch. The tranny is a Mitsu FM145. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks for any help in advance.

Welcome to FTE.
Sluggish performance can be caused by the combination of a number of things.
Did this problem come about slowly over time, or suddenly after some event????
Where are you on past & present due scheduled maintenance, how many miles on this ride, how is the engines physcal condition & do you have a Check Engine Light lit????
Seems to me it is a clutch issue... May be disk is worn, may be pressure plate is weaken (is clutch pedal soft?).... May be slave stucks and clutch is not fully released... Well, inspect clutch first...
