Major surprise!

My son surprised me by sending me a new Dell computer all setup with Ubuntu!

I have griped about MS forever, but never switched to Linex because I was concerned about loosing my "stuff." (And the fact that my computer skills are not highly developed.)

He's a computer "X-pert" and has been using Linex for a long time.... Anyway, he must be prospering even more than I thought to make me such a generous gift!

Wow! Just Wow!

You're gonna hate me (j/k), and this is something I never do (because I can't stand the spell check police), so this my one attempt at a 1 in a million post: Linux

One thing too, for the longest time I pronouced it like many do/did: Lie Nucks.
Then I heard a recording by Linus (the guy who started it all) and its pronounced more like "Lee Nucks" Most people know what you're referring to when pronounced either way. Just letting you know for the sake of trivial conversation.

I think overall you should be pleased with it. There will be some transition but it will run faster and much more solidly. Pretty much every Microsoft Office type of file can be used on it so you're probably okay as far as data goes. You won't have to worry about all those nasty Windows virus programs either but security is going to be a little more complicated to get set up right unless he's already done that for you. I'm surprised he choose that distribution of Linux, its learning curve is steep compared to other distributions.

If my son even suspects that there is something Dad wants, he will show up with it........ talk about spoiling the old man.

I hopped on the Ubuntu train back at version 6.10 and I've never looked back. In my eyes it's one of the most user friendly version of Linux out there, although it can be a little complicated to learn, you'll forget all about your microsoft woes in a short time.

Out of the box it should be pretty much set to handle all your MS files, no worries about loosing any of your "stuff".

I don't mind having my spelling corrected. Often you can understand the root of the word better if you can spell it correctly. Besides, I want to know if I'm getting it wrong.

Ubuntu seems fine, it appears pretty self explanatory so far. He did caution me about where to go in order to add software.

Dono, may I borrow your son for a while? I have a list!

They worry about the old man living alone. He and Son-In-Law showed up today and wired up 4 closed circuit cameras that are password connected to the E-Net. If they call and I don't answer, they can scan my shop, garage and drive to look for my truck. I enjoy my independence, but it is a comfort to have such great kids (Kid?, he's 44) watching after Dad.

Well, You watched over them all these years,,,,, Time to pay back the watching over!!!
I'd wish my Dad was still alive, (5-7-1923/9-11-1999) I'd still watch out for him!

Now if they show up with a VERY BEAUTIFUL lady,,,,,,,You're in trouble!

Here's another way to pronounce 'Linux'.

Linux - definition of Linux by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.

One way to pronounce 'Micro Soft Windows' is:
%$@%$@$$%^^*&^$#$@#@$%@#!%^#&^^*&$#^#%$@#$%#@%@%%

(Pssst, Ben! Check my post above...)

BTW, "Microsoft Windows ME" has at least twice as many syllables as that.
