Question 79 Ford Orange Paint ???

Anyone know what the factory used on its paint jobs? example: enamal, urethane, lacquer, etc.? I'd like to not only paint my ford its original color, but also use the same type paint as the factory. Also, what color primer or under coat color was used?

I want to say that they used a laquer based paint. The primer was determined by the color of the paint, grey or yellow. They were mostly single stage paints that didnt have a huge shine like todays cars, but where very durable. Most body guys would rather paint over the existing paint because of its durability, that re prime the whole truck. If there is a automotive paint store in your area they should have the old ford paint charts there to see exacly what color that they used. It will probably be a PPG chart. They will also be able to tell you exactly what base they udes back then as well.

I think they used enamel; laquer would require polishing.

Thanks for all the input. I am swaying toward enamal because I am told that if it were lacquer, there would be crows footing by now. My paint, where in tact, is not breaking down. The factory paint does not hold a shine unless frequently waxed, but does seem durrable. I seethey don't call any of the shades "orange", so I suppose my color is the Medium copper, #13. Thanks for the paint chip chart!
