I have a 2002 F-150 with the the 4.6L V-8 and 5 sp manual. I ran without pinging on regular fuel for almost 3 years. Then it started pinging on regular when the outside temps dropped into the low 60's upper 50's. I replaced the AIT sensor on the intake tube, no change, I also cleaned the MAF. It ran great with hi-test in the cool/cold tempts. It runs really crappy now that the temps jumped into the 90's. It's not running like it should normally. There are no codes and no hidden codes. It runs like the timing is retarded in the warm temps, help!!!
fuel formulization???/ They are now adding some ethenol to the fuel to suppossedly save cost. Some stations put a sign on the pumps that state " 10% Ethenol Added", but some dont. Try getting fuel from another station and see what happens
I haul gas, and yes , you would be surprised at how many stations add ethanol, and don't tell, yet charge the same as straight NL gas. You will see many more questions being asked about "pinging".
I'm in NJ and ALL our gas has 10% ethanol. My pinging occurs ONLY when the outdoor temps drop into the low 60's and below. As I said it runs great with premium in the winter, felt like a 5.4, not a 4.6! I still have premium in the tank and it ran like ***** the other day when the temps were in the 90's. It felt like the timing was severely retarded. It could not get out of it's own way, had to slip the clutch to rev the rpms up high in order to not stall . That's not good. Ever since new the take off from a stop usually was hesitant in all temps. Now it's a rocket in the winter ! I wonder if the new AIT sensor is bad ? Are there any other sensors or whatever that could be causing these outdoor temp related changes in timing.
