Tire size question

What is the largest size tire I can put on the X without it rubbing? Its a 4x4 and I was to get some AT's.

Some brands of 305's fit without rubbing but I personally think they are too wide for the 7" rim.

295's are a safe(r) bet.

FordTruckGirl77,

That new X didn't come with rubber on the rims ! Bummer! Good question though. I guess adding to this would be what brand does everyone recommend? I still have plenty to go on my X but my 99 F250SD will be needing new rubber soon.

Actually the X has great rubber left but I want to fill the gap so I am going to give these tires to my Dad and get me some new ones.

295/75-16 is a safe go. And still okay on 6.5 - 7'' rims. By own experience

Found another one on current PC - Now running 315/75-16 TOYO OPATs, and with a slight 1.5" lift, 8'' rims:

A 7.5" wheel is recommended for the 285s. Our Exs have a 7". I would question the safety of 295s on a 7" wheel, especially if you plan to tow.

For whatever it is worth, I have towed a 6,000 lb travel trailer for years on 285's. They've never been a problem and the tire shop that installed them said they had not seen any rigs come in with issues because of the 285's on 7" rims. They did however, recommend not going bigger with the stock rims.

I have run BFG's 295/75/16's while towing for the last few years. I travel for my business and we actually got right around 110,000 out of one set and we are currently on 78,000 miles on the second set and they still have 3/4 tread left. Since April 9th we have been from Bryan, TX (home) to Columbus OH; from Columbus to Atlanta GA; from Atlanta to Washington DC; from DC to New York NY; from New York to Boston MA where we are currently. From here we have to go to San Diego stopping in Atlanta, Bryan, and Tuscon on the way. After San Diego we have work in LA, Miami, Annapolis, Jersey Shores, and Montgomery.

Back to the post, with all these miles, I fully back the BFG's as great tires (even with towing)

Thats just my 2 cents.

If you're towing heavy (and everyone's definition of heavy is different), I still believe you should stay as close to stock as possible. My TT pushes 12K and I know I get too much side wall flex with the 285s. When I can find the coin, my next major mod will be going to a minimum of an 8" wheel.
