As much as you have money for. I know that's not the answer you wanted but it depends what you start with and how much you spend to build it up. A factory iron block will only support about 450hp before keeping the head gaskets sealed becomes an issue. And making that kind of power reliably for thousands of miles is a lot more expensive than making it for 1 trip down the track. You could strap some big AFR heads on a 5.0, plug in a cam that makes power out to 8000rpm and get well over 400hp, but it's won't work too well in a big ole truck, so what's the point.

Around 300-320hp for a nice truck engine. In a hot rod 400+ is possible. How you're going to use it makes a big difference in how much money money you'd need to spend (and where).

My mustang has a well built balanced stock bottom with forged piston 306 and AFR heads N/A. I put est. hp at 390 at the wheels. About 425 at the motor. Shifting at 6900 with a 5 speed. These 5.0.s can take some serious power. Get a main support if you do build up the motor. All said and done I put about $6000 into the motor but it has lasted over 6 years of hard 11 second passes and weekend street use.
