first time alignment

im in the process of converting to disc brakes.im at the alignment part now,and i am using the steering link off donor truck.but alignment was still way off.i had to un screw the short side off to clean it and didnt count number of turns.needless to say i was screwed.so i started from scratch centering the steering wheel, getting both tires straight and turning the sleeve to fit rod ends .finally ended up 66inches front and back.my question is why are the threaded rods almost all the wayout compared to when i got it? is there a difference in the 68 and 74 link?did i do something wrong? afraid the clamps on the sleeve dont have enough bite. should i go back and reuse my original link from the 68.since i uncrewed the one side should i go back and run both sides all the way in and start over.one side seems to be extended more than the other.just need a good night sleep and a fresh perspective.

Shouldn't be any problem using the 74 linkage. You can't center the steering wheel with the toe adjustment on these trucks. Set the toe with the wheels pointed straight forward, then pull the steering wheel and put it on straight. I'm using 74 linkage in my 66. I'd still take it to an alignment shop (one that still understands Twin-I-Beam) for the final settings.

Moving the steering wheel just messes up the turn signal switch. I you need to adj the centering move it at the coupling. There is a mark on the steering shaft for center, it should point up. Only do this after the linkage is set correctly.

Check the length of the linkage on the original vs to the 74. If the 74 is shorter use the original one.
