Hey, I have a question. I want to put subs in my truck ('92 F-150 Flareside, ext. cab) But I'm not quite sure where to put them. I was thinking in my center console, I could fit a 10" in there. Maybe an Kicker square L5. But, I dont think I have enough space to have the right amount of volume and be able to shut the lid. I definitly couldn't fit any behind the backseat, because it's flat against the wall and folds down into a cargo bed. Also, even if I get a sub in somewhere, I'm wondering where to fit the amp. Under a front seat maybe? For that I was considering this German brand, Volfenhag or something. It says it has a lot of power for a good price; if anyone has any other suggestions please tell me, but keep in mind I'm on a budget...the cost of the current combo I've got is right at $250. Thanks

well i don't know if this will blow your budget but i bought a 4" rear seat lift kit for my 1988. the seat still works 100% up or down and i put all my amps and crossovers etc. under the seat. my sub and box i actually built-in to the middle of the rear seat bottom so now it is an armrest for humans when up or when down for the dog it just fires into the floor. sounds better when firing into the floor. the company that sells the best lift kit is calmar industries.
check it out. it is the way to go!
Rusty,
Stay away from Volfenhag...its crap! I understand cost being a big concern...I have Planet Audio 12's behind the seat of my reg cab F150, they rock and the're not much more $$$ than the Volfenhag. With your budget you need to look at lower wattage speakers because you can pay $99 for a pair of cheap 1000watt speakers but you will shell out three times as much for an amp. Unless, of course you want to buy a legacy or pyramid 1000 - 2000watt amp for $99 that will push 200watts if you are lucky. I have 2 Planet Audio 12's and a 400watt amp. they have an RMS of 180watts and my amp pushes 175 RMS. There is a guy on yahoo auctions selling Sound Storm amps pretty cheap, and his feedback is good. Here is the link:
My next door neighbor has one of these amps pushing his audiobaun 10's and it sounds pretty good.
If anyone is interested I can get the planet audio 10's for $50ea. and the 12's for $65ea. brand new (1 year warranty). You will have to pay for shipping (I live in Arkansas)zip is 72076.
Your best bet is to shop around and go to some of the smaller audio shops, thats how I did it. I went to a window tint shop to get my windows tinted and found out the owner wholesales car audio eqiupment.
I've got a jl audio 10" stealthbox in the center on the floor of my 95F150 ext. cab. I've had it over 4 years now and it still sounds great. It was well worth the 350.00 I paid for it (4 years ago). It has outlasted a lot of the crap i've had in the past.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-May-02 AT 02:22 PM (EST)]Hey, thanks for the info. A seat lift sounds like a great idea!!
Um, do you think you could send me some pics of your sub set-up that you talked about rusty9?
thanks.
i'll try. might take a while. i don't have digital camera or scanner but i think i can borrow one. it's high time i put my camera where my mouth is anyway - i have suggested it to many. in the mean time i can tell you it is a .60 cu.ft. box (you need a sub that requires a small box) my sub is a 10" POLK AUDIO MOMO. it wasn't cheap but it is high sound quality and requires a small box. the box is right in the middle of the seat. i sunk it into the seat as far as possible and it sticks above about 8"? or so. i covered it all with blue automotive carpet to match interior. made removable lid with metal screen to protect it. ran the wire out the side of the seat to amp underneath. with the lift kit installed i made up a plywood sheet (blue also) about 8-10" wide by the full width of the cab. i bolted it thru the floor and then screwed front and rear amps and crossovers to the board. the seat flips up and down without bothering the gear. the seat when folded down sits 4" higher than now which makes it easier to reach things and my Rottweiler loves it cause now she can see out the windows while lying down. covered the bed with that blue auto carpet too. not advisable in hind site if a dog is gonna be on it. i'd use a tougher material next time. i'll try and get some photos to you. good luck. don't scrimp on speakers man!
Rusty,
Hey, thanks Rusty. About you sinking it into the seat, what exactly do you mean by that? I'm pretty sure I understand everything else, but did you cut out some seat material or did you just push really hard (hehe)?? You guys have really been a lot of help. Thanks!!

yeah exactly. i cut the the whole centre part of the seat (bottom) right out. right down to the metal board. i cut the vinyl only on top though not on the sides. and then i took out a big square of foam. that way the vinyl at the front and back are intact and still look good when the seat is up. so now if you can picture it you can only seat two people, one on each side and they both have an armrest between them that is the sub box and woofer. it is a crazy idea i know. but hey it works for me. the vinyl on my rear seat had a smooth part in the centre and on both sides it is in "ridges". so now the smooth part in the middle is completely gone. or rather the vinyl is stapled to 1/4" ply that formed the square that i sunk the sub box into. you need a light frame to upholster too and keep the seat shape then you sink the box into that. get it?
if you have a centre console though you should look into that. if the bottom of the console is 12 x 12" and about 8" deep you can get a sub in there. that would be cool too. anyway that one 10" POLK MOMO sub with my 400 watt PPI amp rocks. it gives awesome high quality bass. more than an old guy like me needs anyway. then i have a set of POLK MOMO 5.25's in the doors with separate tweeters. The tweeters are just stuck to my A-pillars (temporarily till i can mount them). these speakers are run by a modest MTX Blue thunder amp that is rated at only 37.5 amps per side but actually is proven out at more like 70 per side. anyway these speakers are awesome. i am hearing things on old songs for the first time. you can squeeze 6.5" POLK MOMO's in the doors with a little fudging i think. my head unit is a middle of the line Alpine. i got the speakers at Good Guys in Seattle. go to POLKMOMO.com. if nothing else these speakers have good support thru their website just like this one.
i'll get you some pics soon.
Rusty,
