About a month ago i bought a homemade heavy duty 16ft flat deck 5th wheel trailer from a farmer. When i got it the lights didnt work and the brakes didnt either. i rewired the whole trailer, so i dive into the brake to get them working.
but the brakes are a weird kind that uses a electric coil that gets pulled to the hub and is then turns, pushing the brake shoes out. i have looked all over the axles but i can't find any tags on them, and i dont have any information on them. can someone tell me want kind of axles this are.(picture are linked below)
is it a good enough system or should i just get a whole new brakeing system?
By the looks of your pictures, these are fairly light duty axles, and old style electric brakes. Again depending on what your going to be hauling, you may want to upgrade the hubs/brakes/wheels/tires. If you going heavy, upgrade the axles also. JMHO
There aren't going to be tags on the axle tube as it is almost always homemade/shop made to size. The drums should have some casting marks with name or maybe the backing plate or the electromagnet. They look like Dexter hubs to me and they should be rated at 3500lbs per axle(7000lb total). There should be 2 wires coming out of the hub assembly/electromagnent. One is + and the other -. I do not believe it matters as to which is which. Hook them up to a battery and the electromagnent should be come magnetic if not the coil is bad. Your shoes look like they are in good condition and should last a lond time.
