System Suggestions

I'm pretty new at this sort of thing. I just got my 99 F150 Single cab and I want to put a small system in it. I am looking at something around $400 or so. I looked on crutchfield and it said I needed 6x9's in the door panels and behind the seat too. I need to replace all four speakers. Right now I have a 10 disk cd changer that runs off the factory AM/FM Tuner. I need to replace this tuner unit as well w/ a cassette or something i dunno.

Still in high school, my budget is pretty tight since I still have to pay for the truck. What would be the best system all around for about 400 bucks. Here is what I have looked at:

For speakers some cheap full range pioneers TS-A6965 about $49 bucks a pair.
A RS10A-HP Bazooka Bass Tube about $250 (could go with the EL10A-HP, cheaper, but I haven't heard great things)

And then something in the way of a new receiver.

Any ideas, suggestions, tips would be appreciated. Thanks

Crutchfield is wrong!!! You have 5x7's all the way around. With a budget of $400 you don't have a lot to work with. My suggestion would be to buy a good Head Unit, leave the stock speakers, and buy some inexpensive subs & amp or basstube. I have the Pioneer 7400MP HU and it is awesome. Although it eats up most of your budget it is well worth the money. As long as your stock speakers weren't abused they should sound a lot better with with a new HU. The best feature of my HU is the High Pass Filter, it allows you to filter the lower frequencies of bass so your speakers don't distort and bottom out as you crank the volume up. Check out the link below, they sell them cheap:

Ok.. I have done some more looking around and I have found the bass tube for about 240.00 That leaves me with about 160. I only have 2 5x7's in my truck, I guess the rear two were removed by previous owner because all the wiring is still there and you can tell the rear panels were removed. Anyways I'll continue to use the factory speakers that are in the door, but I'll need some for the rear.

I have found some Kenwood 3 way speakers for about $45 bucks, they are the KFC-5708 model. They are supposedly decent, I think these will work. But should I place the better speakers in the doors or the rear for the best sound, or does it matter.

After that I have about $115 for a new head unit. I am willing to go up a few dollars within reason on this but for the most part I am on a very tight budget. My speakers will be powered through the head so I need something that won't sound like crap. Any suggestions?

IMHO - I wouldn't spend all my money on things that aren't good quality. For $400, you can get a good HU and a good pair of speakers. $400 won't build a quality system.

I would check out any local radio shops, or maybe ebay, and see if you can find a factory HU with changer controls and a cassette. Buy two good quality sets of 5x7's and put them in, and save for quality products. Save the rest and build from there...

If not, then you will find yourself saving for a better HU again, better door speakers again, and better amps and subs than $400 will buy. Build on quality products, don't waste it on low-end products just to have something...

Again - that's my opinion...

If you shop around you should be able to find an amplified bass tube cheaper than $240. You can normally find a good deal on ebay...make sure you check out the sellers feedback, you don't want to get hosed! If you are going to buy the kenwoods and a cheap HU, put the kenwoods in the front and the factory speakers in the rear. I agree with cobra, if your interested in good quality sound you will eventually replace everything you bought spending twice as much. My advice is to start with a good HU, followed by front speakers, rear speakers, and then bass. If you buy good speakers but a cheap HU your not going to have the sound your after. The kenwoods sound pretty good, I have them in my truck. Personally I wouldn't pay $46 for them used because I paid $56 brand new from Circuit City.

the $45 for the kenwoods was a new price. And I understand what you guys are saying about quality. But right now I can't afford top quality and I am just wanting something that will last me until I get my truck paid off and can afford the better stuff.

for $45 I would get the kenwoods, they sound nice in my truck. Make sure you put them in the front doors because the front speakers are the ones you will hear the most. My recommendation for an inexpensive cd player would be a Pineer DEH-1300, they normally cost $115.

Someone suggested a factory head unit with changer controls and cassette. Are factory head units that great? I already have a factory radio and I am unimpressed with it. Wouldn't it be worth the extra money to buy a pioneer, kenwood, or sony?

Factory head units don't give you the power and sound clarity that an aftermarket HU will (unless you buy jensen or road gear). Also, if you want some bass added to your system you will want a HU with RCA pre-outs so you can hook up an amp or bass tube.

Thanks for all the help. I may decide to do this right after all. Buy a nice head unit and a pair of kenwoods. Then save for some subs and an amp or a nice bass tube later.

bass tubes SUUUUCKKKKKK!!!! I bought my original system for $550. That meant replacing deck (got one used for $80), 4 speakers (2 5.25s and 2 6x8s), adding 800w amp and 2 12" subs and box. One of the loudest systems you'll ever hear for the $$ i spent. I would definately suggest looking into Boss amps if you're going to be "thrifty". Wait for a sale on subs, i.e. "buy one get one free". And dont buy one of them big, fancy, graphic displaying, hunks o' crap. Waste of $$. Get a regular deck w/ changer control. Last but not least, dont be a #####, install it yourself.

400 bucks is not going to buy you a badass system. maybe a badass headunit. trust me man i spent like 500 bucks and bought two jensen 12's and some offbrand amp and it sounded like poo. 500 bucks down the drain! i would save up my money around 1200 or so and get ..hmm i would say two kicker comp vr 10's and a high quality amp and box, o yeah and a good deck, maybe even 1 10, and memphis powerreferences, they have swivel tweeters, really good speakers, just put those in the back i think they run 100 bucks a pair. that combo will make you very happy. you will never forgive your self if you go buy a bunch of crap. hey and if you buy good quality stuff you can sale it when u get tired of it! you cant do that with low quality stuff
