How Difficult...
I need to see if I can get some more of the crud off the front of the carb to see if I can get the model number. If not, is there anywhere else that an identifying number can be found? It has a blue "tag" atached to it, but I don't know if the number on it would reference anything that could identify the model I have.
I am in new territory here as I have always had fuel injected imports to work on. Last American made vehicle I had was a '72 International Scout. Pulled the carb off of it and replaced it, but that was probably 20 years ago at least.
Is there anything in particular I need to know about that model carb? Are rebuild kits pretty common or will I need to dig to find someone who has one?
Well, I managed to get the tank out and it had some stuff in it, but not nearly as bad as I expected. Very minor rust in the bottom of the tank, but not much at all. There is something that sounds like gravel rattling around and it won't come out, even after hosing it down real good, so I am letting it air out and dry completely in the 90+ degree sun today and will run a small hose on the end of the shop vac in there to get it out. I am probably going to drop a chain in (new, of course) and rattle it around to knock any other loose stuff off before I do, but I figure the shop vac will suck up any and all loose particles I have left over.
Do auto parts stores carry any kind of coating or sealer to put in tanks like this or is it special order stuff? Any thoughts on what to get or avaoid?
Sending unit looks to be in good shape, but I am going to replace it anyway. Aside from that, everything else looks good. There is some sort of pressure release valve or something with a vacuum hose attached that sits in another hole in the top of the tank. Can't tell if this thing is working right or not and I don't know where the hard line goes that the vacuum hose attaches to.
Any ideas on that thing? I can put pics up tonight if need be.
I managed to get the tank cleaned out pretty good. I got almost all of the rust out, just some very minor surface rust I couldn't get to in one spot. I think there must have been a lot of gunk in there from where it had sat for so long, because it kept gunking up the filter.
Anyway, got the new sending unit back in, replaced a couple of rubber lines and put it all back together. Put is about 5 gallons of fresh gas and.....
she wouldn't fire! I was ticked. So, I pulled some lines and blew them out good, still nothing. Pulled the line from the new fuels pump (MAYBE 2 months old) and had my son turn it over and she wasn't pumping. Soooo, put in a new pump and fired her up yesterday for the first time in over a month.
She actually runs pretty good right now and the problem I had before with gas draining out of the lines and back to the tank seems to have stopped as well, since the filter is full of fuel.
Now, I am looking at replacing that old carb next. Still a lot of stuff to do to get her where I want her, but with limited funds and even more limits on time, it has been slow.
Wanted to say thanks for all of the help and I am sure I will be picking your brains some more before it's all said and done!
