Tube time

Well it's exhaust time for the "55" and I haven't made up my mind on how I want to set the dumps, out the side, the back, bottom dumps? The question is, does any one have finish product pic's in their galleries of their trucks and how they look?

I exited the pipes right in front of the rear wheels. My thinking was with dual exhaust from the 351 that the hump over the rear axle would make a "P" trap and tend to rust out the mufflers and pipes with the condensation. That was 35 years ago and I still am running the same pipes and mufflers. I did add a crossover so it doesn't sound like a four banger when you stand on the side. I don't know how much it helped performance since it already can smoke um in several gears but it does sound like a V-8. Sorry no pictures must do that this weekend if I get time.

check your local laws concerning exhaust systems. Here in Alberta you can't have the exhaust exiting underneath the car, must exit pass the body line.

that being said, my personal favourite is exiting out the side in front of the rear tires with an oval shaped exhaust tip.

I use side dumps. I modified the running boards for the pipe exits.

Remember, the longer the pipes, the quieter the sound. Pointing the tips down also muffles a lot. Length of system and tip angle and shape, as well as muffler choice, of course, determine the exhaust sound level and tone.

Doing the same planning, got the oval tips (nice) do ya think they should come out under the running board or under the front of the rear fender or………. Through the running board in a neat cut out or through the front of the rear fender in a tube (pipe) of its own? Thanks

Ya.......... there must be a hundred different concepts, All close to the same body style, but the trucks all have their own personality, the tubes kind of explain the personality of, lets say, (DAD), LOL, thats why it's nice to look at, should I say, concept pic's

Do you get any rattaling of the pipes to the running board or are they mounted that tight?

Rich -

They are clamped to the underside of the running boards. Here's the gallery showing how I did it: 1956 Ford F100 4x2 - Running Board Mods

LOL........ very, very well illustrated.

do you have any worries about discoloring the running boards from heat or exhaust (carbon, etc)..

We had a set of nice tips close to the body on our 66 Chevy pickup, and it was always black and ugly on the body. and hard to clean..

I ran this setup for a year before this last (2-year) tear-down. No such problems.

Thanks for the compliments.
