I'd bet your starter is bad. 92% sure.

Check for resistance (ohms) on the ground wire if you are in question.

It is possible to lose the ground but not likely. My then new to me 97 SD was not starting now and then so I bought a starter. When I pulled the old one it was a newer looking rebuild and didnt look that old. My first thought was ah hah! been a problem in the past. Truck woud click but nut turn over. Next thing I did was buy the starter relay on the right fender. Truck still would click and not start now and then. Ended up being the wire that runs from the starter relay to the starter solinoid. (12Ga wire not the bat cable) Used a trick shown to me years ago. Pulled the wire off the truck and clamped the starter end terminal in the bench vise and gave it a tug, easily pulled it in two, replaced the wire and it is fixed. Moral of the story here is we can buy parts and guess or diagnose, our choice. Had I got my meter out and tested a few points when it wouldnt start I could have found the bad wire but it is easier to guess the starter (and that will be right 90% of the time in my experiance as was posted) Thoroughly check your connections and wires, not likely, but possible.

I thought that the starter for these trucks were self grounded, meaning that you just run a hot, and tie ground was run to the caseing so when you bolted it on, it completed the circuit. I cant remember for sure, its been about 6 years since I have had to replace a starter for the 7.3

I think your right Todd. I just replaced my starter a couple weeks ago. The brushes ground out to the housing.

it tore up my housing too.. they put a whole new one on, said it burned out due to a bad ground. i dont know if they were trying to cover their faulty rebuild a couple months ago, or if the tranny shop did it when the pulled the starter, as it started going right after i got it back from them. it starts faster now than i ever seen a diesel start

Still need a good ground cable from the batt to the motor.
