Need advice ASAP!

I currently own a 97 F350 PSD dually CC. It has 280K miles and runs great but it isn't 4wd and I need that as I'm on the farm a lot doing off road work and pulling a trailer in fields etc.

I have found a local 99 F350 PSD CC dually that has 181K miles and they want $10,500 for it. What are the main things I should ask about and/or look for with the 99 model? It has 6 new tires filled with Nitrogen and new brakes all around. Also, new water pump. I've done quite a bit of work on my 97 engine but have never even seen a 99 PSD engine. Are they very similar? It is an automatic (wish it weren't) and I assume the original transmission coolers were crap like the 97s. I replaced my 97 cooler with a much bigger one, the biggest I could find that was made for large RVs. I really like my 97 but I really need 4WD.

Thanks for any help/advice.

also in 99 there are two versions...the early 99 and 99.5

nothing wrong with the early 99 at all, but there are differences when ordering parts.

I have the early 99- they were made before 12/98- it has a smaller turbo, but with my DP tuner you really can't tell! There are a list of subtle differences aside from that, but I'd never say I'm not happy with my truck. ALSO- the 99's have an external tranny cooler, but it kinda SUCKS- I swapped it out for a 6.0 tranny cooler and she stays under 180*. Plus a dually can handle loads a bit easier, in that you won't really have any trailer sway at highway speeds, and if you blow a tire (I had a 10mm wrench give me the only flat I've had in my life) you can still keep going a ways SLOWLY if you need to, where as a single RW truck you're done till you change the tire.

that price actually seems high for a 99. The price of these trucks keeps dropping as the price of diesel keeps rising.

I would check with New Car Prices and Used Car Blue Book Values - Official Kelley Blue Book Site for your area and that many miles and it will give the the value. (here in the seattle area, the truck would be worth about 15K even with 181K miles, according to KBB..
