Question checking gauges

Have a 79 which was someones project before I bought it. My temp gauge doesn't work and I have replaced the wire. Have the new sender but was wondering how to check the gauge itself. Was told they work by grounding but is the sender wire hot?

Thanks in advance

No, the wire running to the sender IS the ground. The sender changes resistance when the temperature of the metal surrounding it changes. This changes the amount of voltage running through the gauge to ground. If you disconnect the wire to the sender and touch it to the frame of the truck, the gauge should peg all the way over to the "hot" side of the gauge. If it does not, the gauge is bad or the wiring has breaks in it. The key may need to be in the "ON" position before you try this test.
