Turbo woes

I was having a strange whistling/howling noise that I thought was the turbo taking a crap. I tried rebuilding it only to find a bit of shaft play and the noise was louder. After reading a round and talking to Ron, I decided the turbo was trash. I bought a rebuilt from Ron's Turbo and the noise was still there from the get. Anyone have any other ideas on the howling/whistling/siren noise? Only does it around 1500-2000 rpm (boost 2-5psi). Pitch changes with throttle position. Can't really tell if it is rpm or boost related.

Thanks!

Could the sound that your hearing be coming from the 6637?

I don't have the 6637 but with all that air flow i would have to agree with jim. As soon as i opened up the air flow i had swooshing, like it was sucking in large amounts of air. Others will pop in soon to help you. Good luck.

The only thing I can think of is if there's a burr in the tube or something. It didn't make the sound with the 6637 until the end there, and still making it. I'll get the boost leak detector on it this week and see what I can find out.

This might be too basic, but I have toasted 3 stock Garrett blowers and every time I was sure it was happening b/c of low boost. And odd noises. If you happen to have a boost gauge installed, and could give us that info, I'd guess we could get to root of your issue. How's the oil condition, and air filter? Fresh or old? Is there more black smoke than normal when alot of throttle is applied? These engines like & want ALOT of air. My rig's first turbo would only make 12psi of boost on it's way out. When I turned it off, I could hear the exhaust turbine winding down through the tailpipe. Because it was spinning against the exhaust housing.

My very humble opinion, it's certainly one of three things, boost leak, various turbo issues, or, somewhat less of a possibility, lack of fuel going to the motor. Based on my personal previous experience & issues. Please report back and let us know what is going on.....

Boost at WOT in the 80HP tune is around 23psi so I think I'm good there. EGTs don't get as high or build nearly as fast since the new turbo so there's a plus. Lots of black smoke when going 65 on the interstate and get in to it to pass, so plenty of fuel. 1K miles on synthetic oil, 6637, and Pete's cover so I think I'm covered there. There's a nasty noise from the 6637 when I back out at high boost, but I'm pretty sure this is typical. The turbo spun just fine before and after install, and I trust Ron's work. Have not had a chance to leak test yet, will post any findings after that. I never heard the "pop" associated with the "siren" on either turbo so I'm thinking it is something else????? From what I understand, the turbo noise after shutdown is typical.
