Front Disc Brakes

I'm looking to add front disc brakes. What do you guys think about power vs. non power discs?
I'm running "manual" drums all around at the moment and don't have any stopping problems. Will discs be more or less difficult without power boost than the manual drums?
Basically it's coming down to $$$$ I mean you can buy basic disc kits for a lot less than adding power boosters, and if it's not necessary, I'd rather keep the money to buy gas.

I put disks on the front of my 49. I did not go with a power booster but You do have to change the MC. Used one off a early mustang. I can't compare with 4 drums because I never drove it that way. Stops just fine as far as I'm concerned. Pedal pressure doesn't seem to be bad for a old set of legs.

There should be several articles on this if you do a search. Disc is different than manual. You can not merely put disc on have it work efficiently. Disc take more pressure to activitate the pads, which means you normally have to replace the master cylinder with one that is set up for disc in the front and manual in the back (if that's the way you want to go.) You'll notice the disc MC bowl is much larger because it requires more volume of brake fluid. It also depends if your MC is on the firewall or under the floorboard. If it's under the floor, you'll need residual values in the lines to maintain pressure in the lines. Disc take a 2 lb. and the drum in the rear is a 10lb. I also installed a proportioning valve so you can adjust the pressure for the back drums if need be. There are a few good companies out there with disc conversions. Check out ECI brakes, and CCP (Classic performance parts). As far as a booster? I've driven both. Once you drive the power, you won't go back to manual. It's a much more confortable braking. It's a matter of preference. Good luck.
