It will depend on the motor. If it's a 302/351W you will have to get a different water pump since they run the opposite way with a serpentine belt. If it's a 460 you can use the same water pump. I will be attempting a serpentine conversion on my 460 this summer.
I did it on my Cobra Replica several years ago..289 Hi-Po. Seems that a couple bracket fabrications...idler pulley... and a water pump is all I needed..Worked great..
Why wouldnt you want the v belt system? I liked it because if one breaks, you only lose one accessory, whereas if you break a serpentine, everything stops. Also, a v-belt is cheap compared to serpentine belts.
Thats only partially true. One serpentine belt may cost about $30, but if you replace all your v-belts at the same time at a cost of $9 per belt times 3 or 4 belts, the cost is practically the same.
You are right about lose one belt lose all accesories. I do make sure I have a good belt on my serpentine equipped vehicles and always keep the old belt as a spare in the vehicle should such an incident occur.
I am trying to convert my 460 to eliminate the annoying PS setup which causes squealing at high rpm. It squeals with old belts and new belts so I am hoping an entirely different setup will work. The 460 setup uses 2 small serpentine belts, so if one does break I wont lose everything.
you get that squeeling to.i was ready to pull mee hair out .new belts tight and at 2600rpm squeel.i was wondering if my power steering was the culpret.nice to know i'm not the only one.i will concider that serpintine system myself
