I have an 02 navigator 4x4 I pulled into the driveway friday after work heard a loud pop and that is where she stopped . no steering . Had it flat bedded to dealer the tow truck driver looked under it and said a tierod end broke apart sure glad it didnt happen on hiway this navigator only has 53k on it
My question is do tierod ends break often and should i have the dealer replace the inner and outer on both sides while they are doing it . it drove great before it broke and there was no warning signs something was wrong and will i need an alignment after this is done /
Replace both outer tie rod ends and have the front end aligned afterwards. Might as well have the ball joints checked while you're in there. If they're worn, you'll need an alignment after repairing those, also.
Ford sent out an owner letter a couple of years ago (2004) reminding owners that the tie rods are a regular inspection item per the owner's manual's service schedule (every 15k miles, IIRC). The letter reminded owners that maintenance of the steering was their responsibility and that loss of steering control would result from a tie rod failure.
Ours actually broke as we were traveling down the road at about 35-40mph. The front end of the truck started bouncing violently. I was able to get it off the road.
The truck had about 80k at the time. We had all 4 replaced.
On my 2000 expedition the right side outer one has separated twice since I've had it. It had 60,000 on it when I bought it it has 123,000 on it now. They are not that expensive if I remember right, do all 4 then get your allignment. As someone above said you might check ball joints at the same time. Good luck, Mike
