what sort of gas mileage should I get with my 1999F150xl 4x4?
It has the 4.2v6 engine, automatic transmission and 3.73 rear end.
My truck has about 14000 miles on it. Before I bought this truck I owned a 1995 F150xl 4x4,which I bought new. It had the 4.9 engine,my gas mileage was between 16-20mpg,I purchased this truck expecting the same or better mileage that I got from "good old blue". This new truck is a pig on gas, I'd be lucky to get 14mpg out of it. The dealership changed the plugs,o2 sensor and an air-fuel sensor, they then said that during road tests the truck was gettin between 18-23mpg,(must have been downhill). I got the truck back and was very pleased with increased power but dissapointed with a measly 16mpg. Is this common for this model of ford truck? I love my truck and don't want to part with it but my wallet is'nt bottomless and I think I will have to find a soloution or else(maybe get a chevy). If anyone can shed some light on my problem please do so.
P.s I tried a k&n filter and high octane gas with no better results.

I have a 2001 4x4 Sport 4.2 5 speed with 3.55's. I have 1800 miles. Mixed city/highway driving is 13-14 mpg.. One tank was 16 mpg. I too am hoping for better. The 89 F150 4x4 I replaced it with got 11 mpg. 300 six /4 speed manual. It had 33's and 3.55 gears. It was a dog (tires and gearing). I like my new one.
